"Is Racism still haunting us??? An awful
thought to think!!!"
|
I
believe deep down inside we all want to think that we
are better then that, and even in the midst of writing
this article I am wishing that some unforeseen force
would jump in and end this story with a positive ending
that it is all in the minds of those that want to think
that racism is alive and kicking.
I live
in a small community on the east coast in the state of
Virginia and recently a local electric cooperative have
been hiring for account clerks, and various other office
workers. The pay is is above average for this
community and many people have applied for the jobs,
including myself. The anticipation of waiting for
the call saying " we would like to schedule you for an
interview" is high and running rampant in the minds of
all who feel that they are most qualified for the job.
As I
meet my regularly scheduled beauty salon appointment and
make small talk among the other patron, I quickly find
out the deeply buried thoughts in the minds of my fellow
community members. I mention the local
advertisement in the eastern shore post for a job that
highlights the fact they they will continue to run this
advertisement until it if filled. Even though I
have told no one that I have applied for this position
and feels that I am very much qualified for the
position, I quietly listen as the salon gossip fills the
air.
"That
position will remain there until their are no qualified
white applicants", says one of the patrons. "They
don't hire black people", replies another patron.
I sit quietly, ashamed to admit that I'd applied for
this position, but knowing that it rings of truth, since
it has been well over one month since I applied...well
over one month since the local employment counselor
expressed that I was a very good candidate for the job.
I
think that this is a fight that I don't want to battle.
I think that I will just log this away in the back of my
mind and move on. I'm sorry that I can't be the
great martyr that I should I should be, but somehow,
deep, deep inside I would much rather believe that my
application was lost in the shuffle.
In the
meantime, I will continue to work at home.
