Obtaining a Business License

 

 

So you want to start a business and do not know if you need a business license!     Well, there are many things you need to consider when starting a business, but now  we will focus on obtaining the correct business license when licensing your business.  There are various types of licenses,.  Most cities, counties, states and even federal government require some form of licensing to operate a business.

 Nearly all businesses need a local  (city or county) license, however you can check with your  county government or local city hall to be sure.  This type of license will give you, the business owner, the legal authority to operate your business within that city or county.  These types of licenses are very easy to obtain.  

      You can request information for licensing your business over the internet by downloading the forms, completing and mailing them along with your fee or you may visiting  City Hall or the County Office in your area. If you choose to do this in person be sure that you have all necessary paperwork such as any documents pertaining to your fictitious name and verification of you EIN Employer Identification Number.


 
A state license will be required if you provide any type of product or services that are regulated by the state or businesses that have to meet certain codes of standard. These are licenses are mainly persons of certain professions, such as lawyers, doctors, realtors, hairdressers and others. Businesses that are required to maintain a certain code of standard, such as restaurants and bars are also required to have a state license.

A sale tax license or permit is required by almost all states. This type of license allow you to charge sales tax to your customers when they make purchases. By visiting your local Commissioner of Revenue you will be able to find out if you are required to have a sale tax license for your business.

A federal license is required only if your business is regulated by the government. Some examples of government regulated businesses would be businesses that sell regulated products such as firearm or alcohol. Interstate Trucking businesses that require ICC authority. In obtaining a federal license you should be sure to obtain professional advices.
